Shipping 3D prints: packaging, timing and tracking

What to expect on packaging quality, delivery windows, and tracking visibility when your 3D printed part is shipped.

3D prints are fragile. Here is what good shipping looks like, so you know what to expect and what to flag as a problem.

Packaging standards makers follow

Verified makers on 3D Hub Plus follow a minimum packaging standard:

  1. Inner wrap. Part is wrapped in bubble wrap, foam sheet, or tissue paper depending on fragility.
  2. Fill material. Void around the part is filled with packing peanuts, air pillows, or crumpled paper so the part cannot shift in the box.
  3. Outer box. Corrugated cardboard box sized so there is at least 2 cm of cushioning on all sides.
  4. Label. Return address, "Fragile" marking, and tracking label.

Specialty items like miniatures get individual compartments. Resin prints get extra UV-blocking wrap if they are light-sensitive. Tall thin parts get rigid internal support.

If your package arrives and the part is loose in the box, not wrapped, or crushed, that's a packaging failure — open a revision request with photos.

Where packages travel

Every shipment is domestic. Shop (catalog) orders ship within the United States only. Marketplace print jobs are matched to makers in your own country, so a UK job is printed in the UK and a Canadian job in Canada. Nothing crosses a border, which means no customs forms, no import duties and no clearance delays on any order.

Carriers and speed

  • Standard: 2–5 business days (USPS, Royal Mail, Canada Post and equivalents)
  • Faster services exist at the carriers, but the platform publishes standard service only — do not plan around an expedited option that is not offered at checkout.

Tracking visibility

You will get a tracking number as soon as the maker hands off the package. Most carriers update status at:

  • Label created
  • Picked up
  • In transit (sometimes including waypoints)
  • Out for delivery
  • Delivered

Some cheaper carriers (for small/light packages) only show "shipped" and "delivered" — no intermediate steps. This is normal for lightweight print orders and not a cause for concern.

When to worry

  • No tracking update for 7+ days after label creation — contact the maker to confirm the package actually shipped
  • Tracking stuck "in transit" for 14+ days — likely lost. Open a dispute; support works the carrier claim with you case by case
  • Shows "delivered" but nothing arrived — check with neighbours, your building reception, and the carrier first; if it still has not turned up, open a dispute while the inspection window is open

Who pays for shipping issues?

  • Lost in transit: maker + platform, you get a refund or reprint
  • Damaged in transit: usually platform-handled; we help you file a carrier claim
  • Wrong address (your fault): you pay for re-shipping
  • Wrong address (maker's fault): maker covers re-shipping
