Your photo is printed as a lithophane — a thin panel whose thickness varies with the picture, so it reads as an image when there is light behind it. It sits in the vessel rather than being part of it: the back opens, so a new photo is a new panel, not a new one of these.

A lithophane needs light behind it: hang it where a window, a lamp or a tree bulb sits behind the panel. In front of a dark wall it reads as a pale disc. The disc is interchangeable: replacement photo discs are sold on their own and fit all four looks, so one ornament can carry a different photo every year.
