What is a lithophane?
A lithophane turns the brightness of your photo into physical thickness: dark areas print thick and block light, bright areas print thin and let it shine through. Hold it up to a lamp or window and the picture appears — with depth, softness and glow that a paper print can’t match. The art form dates back to 1820s porcelain; we build yours from a 3D model generated in your browser, sculpted from your photo with print-ready walls, borders and mounting options.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a lithophane?
- A lithophane is a 3D-printed relief of a photo. Thin areas let light through and thick areas block it, so when you place it in front of a lamp, window or LED base, the photo appears in glowing detail. With the light off it looks like a subtle embossed panel.
- What photos work best for a lithophane?
- Clear, well-lit photos with good contrast work best — faces, pets and landscapes are all great. Our studio includes auto-enhance, contrast and detail controls plus a photo-real tone mapping mode that keeps the backlit result faithful to the original picture.
- How much does a custom lithophane cost?
- You see the exact price up front as you design — no bidding, no surprises. Shipping is shown at checkout — free shipping on orders over $15 — and sales tax is added there too. Once you order it is printed in our workshop and shipped to you.
- What sizes and shapes can I make?
- Standard photo sizes (4×6", 5×7", 6×8") plus fully custom widths from 50 to 200 mm. 14 outlines to cut it to: Rectangle, Circle, Oval, Heart, Star, Hexagon, Ornament, Tag, Paw, Pumpkin, Arch, Gothic, Horseshoe and Soft arch. You can also have the panel itself cut to your own letters or a number — a name, a year, an initial — with the photo inside them. You can also add a hanging hole for wall display and bake a short line of text into the print.
- Do I need my own 3D printer?
- No — you design it free in your browser, and once you order it is printed in our workshop and shipped to you, no account needed. These are made to order and print-and-ship, so there isn’t a separate STL download.
- What color should a lithophane be printed in?
- White, cream or warm-white PLA give the classic glowing result because light passes through cleanly. The studio previews eight common filament colors, including translucent amber and blue for a stained-glass look.
- How do I light a lithophane?
- Any backlight works: a window, a lamp, an LED strip or a lithophane light box. Warm-white LEDs give the most natural skin tones; the studio’s preview is lit the same way from the moment it opens, so what you see is what a lamp will show.
